Frequently Asked Questions
Orthodontics treatment is a specialty in Dentistry that requires lots of skills and knowledge. If you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact us.
All cases need to be assessed by Dentists, not all needed to have extractions; but if needed, it is mainly due to 2 reasons:
- Severe dental crowding, not enough space for teeth alignment. Extraction is to provide spaces for alignment.
- Protrusive teeth, causing protrusive lip profiles. Extraction is to provide spaces for teeth retraction and profile improvement.
During Childhood, Early Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment is mainly for initial teeth alignment and most importantly, growth modification to improve skeletal problems, as they are at an actively growing stage. For Adults, Orthodontic Treatment is mainly for dental corrections, as growth has already finished and skeletal factors can only be corrected by surgical options. There is no age-limit for Orthodontic Treatment, but the dentition should be in good condition and the patient is able to maintain good oral hygiene during Orthodontic Treatment.
Usually 1-3 years for most of the cases, depending on the complexity of cases, the dental condition and the method chosen.
The function of Retainers is to maintain teeth position after Orthodontic Treatment, to avoid relapse of teeth position. After teeth are moved to a new position, the tension of the adjacent structures will tend to move the teeth back to their original position; so if no Retainers are worn after Orthodontic Treatment, teeth alignment may gradually relapse with time, and new Orthodontic Treatment may be needed. Therefore, long term Retainer wearing is highly recommended after Orthodontic Treatment.
